FAQs

What is laser vision correction?
Laser vision correction is a procedure that improves vision by using a laser to permanently change the shape of the cornea. Often referred to as LASIK (an acronym for the medical term laser assisted in-situ keratomileusis), it is the most commonly performed laser vision correction procedure and is an effective treatment for a wide range of vision problems.

What is VISX Advanced CustomVue laser vision correction?
Advanced CustomVue is an individualized laser vision correction procedure that combines the WaveScan WaveFront System and the VISX STAR S4 IR Excimer Laser with Iris Registration (IR), enabling a doctor to measure unique imperfections in a person's vision and design an individualized treatment. Iris registration technology increases accuracy and precision by centering the treatment correctly, regardless of changes in the pupil center from measurement to treatment.

How does the Advanced CustomVue Procedure work?
First, the wavescan technology precisely measures each eye's unique imperfections to create an individualized treatment plan. This information is then digitally transferred to the VISX STAR S4 IR Excimer Laser System, where it is used to deliver the treatment to your eyes.

How does Advanced CustomVue individualized laser vision correction differ from standard LASIK?
Advanced CustomVue uses WaveScan WaveFront technology with VISX-exclusive algorithms (mathematical guidelines) to measure the unique imperfections in your vision 25 times more precisely than the measurement method used in standard LASIK. The VISX STAR S4 IR Excimer Laser with Iris Registration (IR) also includes a number of technology advancements that improve treatment accuracy and precision.

What is Iris Registration Technology?

It's normal for a patient's pupil to shift positions from the time their eye is measured and the time of treatment. Iris registration technology centers the treatment correctly, independent of changes in the pupil center from measurement to treatment.

Is the Advanced CustomVue Procedure approved by the FDA?
Yes, Advanced CustomVue is FDA-approved to potentially treat more than 94 percent* of the eligible population, including patients with nearsightedness, farsightedness (hyperopia) and astigmatism. Advanced CustomVue is the first FDA-approved wavefront-guided treatment for high myopia (from -6 to -11 diopters). *Market Scope Data, U.S. Vision Population, 21 Years of Age or Older, 2005

How can Advanced CustomVue treat nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatisms?
All three vision problems are most often caused by imperfections in the cornea. Advanced CustomVue uses the WaveScan WaveFront System to measure those distinct imperfections, creating a map of each eye. The WaveScan System translates these detailed digital measurements into a set of treatment instructions, which it transmits to the laser. The laser reshapes the cornea to improve vision.

How accurate is WaveScan technology?
WaveScan technology measures imperfections in an individual's vision 25 times more precisely than standard methods used for glasses and contact lenses. Before WaveScan, LASIK surgery was performed using the same measurement methods doctors use when prescribing glasses and contact lenses.

What makes the Advanced CustomVue Procedure different than other procedures?
The combination of WaveScan WaveFront System measurement technology and the sophisticated capabilities of the VISX STAR S4 IR Excimer Laser System enable doctors to calculate a more precise and individualized treatment.

How is the Advanced CustomVue Procedure able to treat conditions like mixed astigmatism and high myopia where other systems can't?
The precision enabled by the WaveFront WaveScan System's measurements is made possible by the STAR S4 IR Excimer Laser System. The laser system includes Variable Spot Scanning (VSS) technology, along with Variable Repetition Rate (VRR) technology, and Iris Registration, ensuring the laser can perform the treatments indicated by the WaveScan System's measurements.

What can the Advanced CustomVue Procedure do for me?
As shown in FDA clinical studies, Advanced CustomVue can produce better vision than possible with glasses or contact lenses. Though statistical results vary by the type of condition being treated, more than 95 percent of all study participants - regardless of condition treated - could see well enough to pass a driving test. More detailed information on outcomes can be found in the Patient Information Booklet and Patient Information Sheet.

Who is a candidate for the Advanced CustomVue Procedure?
If you are 21 years of age or older and wear glasses or contact lenses to correct nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism, or mixed astigmatism, you may benefit from the Advanced CustomVue Procedure. See your ophthalmologist for more information and to determine if you are a candidate for the Advanced CustomVue Procedure.

How does the Advanced CustomVue Procedure affect night vision?
FDA clinical studies showed that three times as many participants were very satisfied with their night vision after treatment compared to their night vision with glasses or contact lenses before treatment. See your eye doctor for more information.
Will I need glasses or contact lenses after the Advanced CustomVue Procedure?
Probably not. Individual results may vary, but one year after an FDA clinical study for treatment of myopia (nearsightedness), all participants saw well enough to drive a car without glasses or contact lenses. Most participants achieved 20/20 vision or better.

What is Crystalens?
The Crystalens is an intraocular lens replacement that, unlike a standard lens, doesn't just treat your cataracts but is designed to correct your full range of vision. The Crystalens can reduce or eliminate your dependence on glasses. In fact, many patients hardly if ever need their glasses after surgery. You probably noticed in your forties that you started to lose some of your up-close vision and had to start wearing reading glasses. The unique Crystalens is designed to reduce or eliminate glasses for most activities including: reading a book, working on the computer, and driving a car.

What is the beach lens or fish lens I saw in your TV ad or TIME magazine ad?
The lens is called the Crystalens. The Crystalens is an intraocular lens replacement that, unlike a standard lens, is designed to not only treat your cataracts but also to help correct your full range of vision.

How is this different from regular cataract surgery?
In the past, cataract surgery was only able to correct for cataracts and patients would still be dependent on glasses for most of their daily activities, especially for up close and intermediate. You are luck that there are options now for people undergoing cataract surgery. The Crystalens can correct for more than just your cataracts. The Crystalens is designed to offer you a full range of vision and reduce or eliminate your dependence on glasses.

Will I really be able to see without glasses? Will I be 20/20?
Since everyone's vision, expectations, and lifestyles differ it is difficult to determine how much you will be dependent on glasses. If you are like many of our patients, you should be able to experience the same quality of vision you did when you were younger, with a reduce dependence on glasses after Crystalens surgery. At your consultation the surgeon will be able to assess what your best vision could be.

Will I experience halos or glare? Will this lens effect how I drive at night?
All lenses including traditional standard lenses may have some degree of halos and glare. Glare and halos have been observed with the Crystalens. However, unlike a multifocal lens, the Crystalens works similarly to your natural lens in the way it delivers all available light rays at all distances-near, far, and intermediate. So the Crystalens generally has less halos and glare than a multifocal lens. On the day of your consultation, the doctor will discuss with you all of the risks and benefits associated with a Crystalens procedure.

Will Crystalens stop working over time?
The Crystalens surgery is permanent and there is no reason to believe that the lens will stop working over time. Patients have had lenses implanted in their eyes for nearly 7 years with no change in its ability to flex. It is an extremely well tested and durable design. At your consultation the surgeon will be able to assess what your vision will be like after the procedure.

Will insurance/Medicare cover any of the procedure?
Insurance coverage varies greatly from policy to policy. Generally speaking private insurance and Medicare will cover the cataract surgical procedure and may also allow a certain additional amount for the artificial lens implants. Please bring your insurance information to your free consultation so we can see what your specific policy covers.
