Laser Vision Correction

One of the safest and most commonly performed surgical procedures in the world, LASIK has allowed millions of people to reduce or eliminate their dependence on glasses and contact lenses. LASIK, or Laser-Assisted In-Situ Keratomileusis, is a quick, virtually painless procedure in which a laser is used to reshape the cornea, the transparent top layer of the eye. Because the cornea is a powerful part of the eye’s focusing mechanism, flaws in its shape result in such common vision disorders as nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. By restoring the cornea to its proper, spherical shape, our surgeon is able to improve the eye’s focusing power and restore vision, often to 20/20 or better.

LASIK Details

Laser-Assisted In-Situ Keratomileusis (LASIK) is an FDA-approved surgical procedure intended to reduce dependency on eyeglasses or contact lenses. It is performed on nearly 1 million patients each year to correct myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), and astigmatism by permanently altering the shape of the cornea, the eye's thin, transparent covering. This reshaping of the cornea increases the eye’s focusing power and improves vision.

During LASIK surgery, a thin incision is made to form a flap in the surface of the cornea. The flap is folded back to reveal the cornea’s midsection, called the stroma. Next, an excimer laser is used to remove a thin layer of the stroma. Lastly, the flap is repositioned. As with any surgical procedure, there are risks involved with LASIK. Side effects may include excessively dry eyes, corneal scarring, corneal edema, persistent eye pain or discomfort, glare and halos in the line of vision, and a decreased ability to see well at night or in fog. However, most of these subside as healing progresses after surgery.

According to the Eye Surgery Education Council (ESEC), more than 90 percent of patients who undergo LASIK experience vision improved to 20/40—the minimum vision standard for driving an automobile or playing sports without corrective eyewear. Fifty-six percent of patients report post-surgery 20/20 vision. LASIK does not prevent age-related eye conditions or diseases. Results are permanent, and most patients return to their normal daily activities the day after surgery.

LASIK to Treat Hyperopia

Hyperopia occurs when light rays focus behind the retina rather than on it. This condition, which allows one to see distant objects much more clearly than objects that are close, is generally caused by a “short eye” or a cornea that is too flat. In the latter case, hyperopia can usually be treated with LASIK, which will increase the curvature of the cornea in order to allow light rays to focus properly.

LASIK to Treat Astigmatism

In a normal, healthy eye, the cornea is round. In an astigmatic eye, it is closer to the shape of a football, which prevents the eye from focusing light in just one place on the cornea; instead, light rays focus at several points, blurring near, middle, and distant vision.

LASIK can correct irregular curvature and improve the eye’s focusing ability. It can ultimately improve near, middle, and distant vision.

LASIK to Treat Presbyopia

As we age, the lens of the eye loses its flexibility, impairing the eye’s ability to focus and eventually affecting near vision. This naturally occurring condition is called presbyopia, and it often affects the reading vision of people over the age of 40.

Unfortunately, LASIK cannot be used to treat presbyopia. In fact, LASIK can actually worsen close-up vision in presbyopic patients, making them even more dependent on reading glasses than before.

Advanced CustomVue Laser Vision Correction

The Most Advanced Custom Wavefront-Driven Treatment Available
Your choice to undergo laser vision correction with the VISX Advanced CustomVue Procedure from AMO puts you in good company. More physicians in the U.S. choose VISX lasers to perform laser vision correction than all other lasers combined. That's because VISX has led the industry since the beginning and continues to provide innovative advances that improves outcomes and ensures patient satisfaction.

Advanced CustomVue delivers exceptional outcomes

The Advanced CustomVue Procedure is now a potentially superior vision correction alternative to glasses and contact lenses. Also, clinical studies showed high participant satisfaction with night vision after the Advanced CustomVue Procedure.
Many surgeons agree that the new level of measurement accuracy possible with the VISX system makes the Advanced CustomVue Procedure the most effective laser corrective procedure available* for the broadest range of vision imperfections.
*Market Scope 2006 Annual Refractive Surgery Survey

How is this possible?

Advanced CustomVue combines a number of technology innovations into a laser vision correction procedure individually customized to each eye.

Your eyes are as unique as your fingerprint. Advanced CustomVue addresses your eyes' distinct characteristics using the WaveScan WaveFront System and VISX Technology's exclusive mathematical rules  to capture each eye's unique imperfections with far greater accuracy than ever before possible. Like a topographical map showing the surface features of a landscape, WaveScan Technology creates a detailed map of your eye's optical system. The system translates that information into completely personalized digital treatment instructions and sends them directly to the STAR S4 IR Excimer Laser System.

VISX Iris Registration

The Advanced CustomVue Procedure provides a new level of precision in treatment alignment with VISX Iris Registration, the first FDA-approved, fully automated method of aligning treatment. It's normal for the pupil to shift positions from the time an eye is measured to the time of treatment. Iris registration technology centers the treatment correctly, regardless of the amount of time between wavefront measurement and laser treatment and independent of changes in the pupil center from measurement to treatment.

VISX STAR S4 IR Excimer Laser System

The VISX STAR S4 IR Excimer Laser system represents the most advanced laser technology platform available today. Integrating data collected by the WaveScan WaveFront System, the STAR S4 IR utilizes VISX Iris Registration and other exclusive VISX technologies to deliver advanced precision and enhanced safety. The Advanced CustomVue Procedure is not affected by the patient's eye movement during treatment and minimizes correction to only those areas of the cornea that require reshaping.

                                         Facts to Remember

  • Advanced CustomVue is now FDA-approved to treat more than 94 percent* of patients eligible for laser vision correction.
  • Advanced CustomVue represents the next generation of laser vision correction, combining the technologies of the WaveScan Wave Front System and the VISX STAR S4 IR Excimer Laser with Iris Registration (IR).
  • Advanced CustomVue has established a new standard in laser vision correction by earning FDA approval to treat mild to severe nearsightedness with or without astigmatism, farsightedness with or without astigmatism, and mixed astigmatism.
  • The Advanced CustomVue Procedure is wavefront-driven and features VISX's exclusive, proven mathematical formulas, enabling doctors to measure and correct the unique imperfections in each individual's vision.
  • Wavefront-guided Advanced CustomVue tailors a distinct correction for each individual eye. In fact, each treatment is "designed" by the unique characteristics of the individual's eyes.
  • Advanced CustomVue is the wavefront-guided laser vision correction procedure with the broadest range of FDA-approved treatments.

As demonstrated in FDA clinical trials, Advanced CustomVue can potentially produce better vision than is possible with glasses or contact lenses. *Market Scope Data, U.S. Vision Population, 21 Years of Age or Older, 2005

                                      Notable Outcomes

  • During clinical trials for FDA approval, participants undergoing Advanced CustomVue treatment for all indications achieved the following outcomes:
  • More than 92 percent of all clinical study participants could pass a driving test without glasses or contact lenses one year after treatment.
  • Almost three quarters of all clinical study participants could see 20/20 or better without glasses or contact lenses one year after treatment.
